Heuchelheim, Jan. 11, 1916

My dear ones!

Now that I am my dear Eugen's bride, I have entered into a family relationship with you, and therefore I dare address you as such. I have had the intention to write to you for a long time, but I did not want to do so before I was wearing Eugen's ring

on my finger. We exchanged our rings during the sublime celebration of Christmas. Now I have become Eugen's bride and I want to devote myself to him with noble love. And my hope is that some time in the future we will be as happy as you are now. One dreams of good times in the future, of spring and the pleasures of love. But how utterly different are these dreams of the future from our austere present days. There is horrible fighting going on all around, and we do not know

what the future holds for us. Pray that my Eugen will be spared the fate of war. Many a German girl weeps for her beloved, many a bride for her bridegroom, who sleeps a hero's death in foreign ground, be it in the soil of Flanders, be it in the cold of Russia, or in the forbidding ground of Serbia. He has had to give his young life away and his love weeps for him in quiet, unspeakable grief. So far I have been spared such suffering and

I cannot tell you just how thankful I am. However, should his duty call upon him once again, we, too, have to be able to separate. The German girl, the German woman has to stand upright as well in this battle of nations, she must not be defeated by grief and suffering. The German woman, the German virgin contributes towards victory, be it in the care for wounded and sick people, or in diligent, industrious work in the house or in the field. German women's hard work has accomplished such a vast amount of love gifts and loving work. Let's pray to God that one day when things are quiet and peaceful, we will be able to tell you about this. Thanking you, my dears, for your kind engagement wishes, I hereby sincerely greet you,
