San Francisco, Sept 28th 1872.
Mr J Dreyer
Dear Sir,
The Director of
the California Atlantic & Pacific Rail Road desire to
say to you as a subscriber for Stock in their Company
that they expect to build their Road, notwithstanding
the hostility of the present Board of Supervisors.
This expectation is grounded on the belief that a
large majority of the people will vote against the
Ten million and the Two and a half million subsidies.
As you have shown your good-will
by subscribing for some of our stock, we ask
you to continue you confidence and co-operation
with us until our labors can be crowned
with success.
The first and most important work to
be done is to oppose and counteract the schemes
of your opponents, who seek to fasten upon you a
fearful increase of Taxation without any equivalent.
Their attempt to popularize their scheme
by offering to receive subscriptions for small amounts
of their stock, is a device that we hope will not
deceive the people. Every one who has the
prosperity of our City sincerely at heart, should
take an active part in defeating their plans, and we
ask your assistance in the good work.
Remember that not to vote against, is in effect
to vote in favor of the subsidies.
Very truly yours A Haynam
President
M J O’Conner
President
