Meyer family letter, December 20, 1869

English Text

Lachen, Dec. 20, 1869

My dear ones,

With the greatest joy we received your valued handwritten lines once again, in which we heard that you are all well, which you can always be assured of on our part as well. Now, we received bill of exchange from you, for which we dearly thank you. The Infinitely Good One will bless you for this and reward you a thousand times.
In consequence of my letter of the past week, today I don’t know of much news. Business is still the same old [?} dregs[/?] & nevertheless one always [..?..] to earn a few kreutzer. Because in Germany one has to put up with quite a few things. I [?] mentioned [/?] to you in my previous letter that I wanted to send you my photograph as a military man, but it wasn’t ready. So I am sending it to you today & I think [?] you will not take offense at this article [/?] since I am not the [debtor/liable party/one who owes something].

[page 2:]

In addition, I asked [?] would like to ask [/?] you about an article of sister Babett, which is very rude of me to mention such a thing today. Now I am just asking you whether you could do what I wrote you about before. If you are not in a position to do this at this moment, then just tell me how and why. Because, I really feel bad when I think about it. The brothers get married & the sisters are running around nonchalantly. Really it is a big shame for the entire family. But I don’t want to offend any of you and also do not intend to tell anyone what to do since you are all older and wiser than I. If I have offended any of you please excuse me. Since I don’t know of any other news, I am concluding with the pen, but not in my heart: many cordial greetings from our dear parents and also from sister Babette and me, and with that I remain your loyal brother until death.

Hoping for a good answer soon

Karl Mayer
