Lachen, September 10, 1857 Dear Son! 
Briefly I want to tell you that we received your letter with great joy from the hand of Uncle Mayer and were very happy that we also saw your dear handwriting again. Don’t believe because you made every effort that we did this carelessly, that you are not receiving any letter from our hand. [i.e., don’t think the fact that you haven't received any letters from us is due to carelessness on our part] We did not get the letter with the 50 dollars. However, we did get your letter with the ring and immediately wrote an answer. We think you probably received it. You write us that you are living comfortably in America. That makes us very happy.  Your letter that you sent to me made me very happy. You write that I should give up the meat trade. One can’t live from that. You know of course how business in Lachen is with meat. You ask for the address of your uncle from Wallertheim. His address is Bronfurdt Sremmel in Wallertheim in Canton Wörrstadt. Write us a reply as soon as you get the letter.
