A new video produced by the German Heritage in Letters project explores the importance of our work to find, collect, and share the historic correspondence sent and received by German immigrants in the United States. The video tells the story of Charles Haase, who immigrated to Richmond, Virginia from Sandersleben in Anhalt in the 1850s. Over the next half-century he carried on correspondence with his cousins both in Germany and in imperial Russia. His descendant, Mary Geschwind, eventually inherited the letters and, recognizing their importance, transcribed and translated them.
